Don’t Fear Disease

Posted by John Smith on November 18, 2011

Deuteronomy 28:60 NKJV Moreover He will bring back on you all the diseases of Egypt, of which you were afraid, and they shall cling to you.

This sounds like a pretty scary verse. Look out or God will bring on you fearful diseases… but let’s hold on a minute and look at some context.  Deuteronomy 28:15 lets us know that this is one of the curses under the old covenant for disobeying God’s commands. In Deuteronomy 28:1 God tells the Children of Israel that health and blessing are theirs, if they’ll walk in obedience to His Word. God gave His people a choice under the Old Covenant to walk in His blessings and health (Deuteronomy 28:1-14) through obedience to His Word or to walk outside of His covenant through disobedience and be exposed to various curses including diseases that were free to afflict those in disobedience. Even living under the Old Covenant, one didn’t have to fear disease; all you needed to do was walk in His Word and you could be free from sickness and disease. What about us under the New Covenant?

Galatians 3:13 NKJV Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE”),

Under the New Covenant, Jesus bore the curses listed in Deuteronomy 28. Although He never sinned (Hebrews 4:15), Jesus bore the punishments for breaking God’s commands. He did this so that you and I would never have to. It is not God’s will for us to ever be sick or endure disease.  Jesus came and redeemed us from the curse of the law and sickness/disease both fall under that curse.

You must know your rights… I went to an office store to purchase a flash drive one day we needed for use in the church office. They had them marked down to a great price (50% off), so I grabbed one and headed to the register. The cashier scanned the drive and told me the price, which I would have paid, except I knew of a competitor that had the exact same flash drive marked down to an even better price (70% off) and I knew that they would match the price. I told the cashier of their competitor’s price, they verified I told them the truth, gave me the additional discount and I left satisfied because I knew their promises to their customers and got what was due me. We needed the drive and I would have paid the retail price. Thankfully, it was on sale, but it wasn’t the best deal I could get. Still, I would have paid the discounted price. But because I knew the competitor’s price and their promise to match that price, I SPOKE THAT TRUTH.

Many people live in fear of sickness and disease today. They believe in the salvation that Jesus provided, but there are so many more benefits that He provides! Some don’t know that Jesus bore those curses in His body so they would be free (Colossians 3:13, Matthew 8:17, 1 Peter 2:24), and when disease attacks they simply take it. Others have heard that Christ bore their diseases and pains, but aren’t convinced of His healing policy and never speak up. Don’t fear sickness and disease. Jesus has redeemed you from the curse of disease. He bore stripes that you would be healed. Jesus paid for your health. Don’t let the devil try to charge you for things that He has already paid in full. Don’t fear disease. Speak up and say, “Jesus bore sickness and disease in His Body. By His stripes I am healed. I will not fear disease. I will walk in health.” And FEAR NOT!
