2 Kings 25:26 And all the people, small and great, and the captains of the armies, arose and went to Egypt; for they were afraid of the Chaldeans.
The governor of the land of Judah, Gedaliah, had just been assassinated by a band of jealous, power hungry Israelites that had been corrupted and convinced by the Ammonites, who wanted to see the remnant of Judah utterly destroyed, that it was the best move for Jewish people. Now the remaining remnant and the multitude of people that had returned to Judah to live peacefully in the land feared reprisal from the Babylonians for the death of their appointed official and began fleeing for Egypt. They were fleeing in fear.
Jeremiah 41-43 gives a much more detailed account of the entire situation including God’s commentary. In Jeremiah 42:11-17, God tells His people in the land of Judah to remain there in the land and to not fear reprisal from the Babylonians. He continues to tell them running in fear is a mistake… telling them if they flee to Egypt that they will encounter the very thing that they fear, but that if they remain in the land of Judah they will be protected from famine, pestilence, disaster, and war. Then God plainly told His people through the prophet Jeremiah, “Do NOT go to Egypt!”
The people chose to be led by their fear instead of trusting and obeying God, who had never failed them. They said, “Jeremiah is lying to us. He is making up that word and it is not really a Word from the Lord.” They would not believe because they were blinded by their fear and everything God told them would happen happened.
I am so grateful that after the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus, that He sent us God, the Holy Spirit to live with us and in us forever (John 14:16). Now in every situation, we can have the wisdom and direction of God. We no longer have to wait for a prophet to hear from God for us, but every Christian can hear from God for ourselves. As part of the pastoral team in a local church, I pray that ever member of our church would learn to clearly hear and discern His voice for He indeed speaks to us. You can hear and know the voice and will of God for you. In James He said He’d speak to you wisdom, Jesus said He (God the Spirit), would teach us and show us things, and in Hebrews 12 we are admonished to not refuse the Lord God who speaks.
He loves you so much that He sent His Son to die for you, raised Him from the dead, so you could eternally live with Him and then came by His Spirit to live with you and in you forever. He will lead you and guide you and give you His perfect wisdom in every situation. LISTEN!
We live in a time where opportunities to fear surround us all the time. The next time you begin to have a bout with fear… before you decide or do anything, FEAR NOT, just stop and ask Him for direction. Spend time with Him until it becomes clear. Then confidently and FEARLESSLY proceed with His plan. It always works for your victory! You know His voice, FEAR NOT!
