Psalms 49:5 NKJV Why should I fear in the days of evil, When the iniquity at my heels surrounds me?
MSG So why should I fear in bad times, hemmed in by enemy malice,
Last week we talked about journaling and asking ourselves, “Why should I fear?” When I read this Psalm journaling about a fear or creating a fear list is what I am reminded of. As I mentioned last week, many times that is all that is necessary. Sometimes just getting the fears out of your head and onto a piece of paper eliminates the compulsion to feel like you need to think and dwell on the issue. This stops us from constantly thinking about the fear and hyper inflating it in our heads to the point that it is overwhelming. Journaling the fear can be empowering and one may realize they have overcome the fear by just writing out their thoughts and facing it at least on paper.
At the very least having journaled and located what and why you are afraid, asking, “Why should I be afraid?” helps you put that fear back in context. You can see where the fear is in reference to the reality of the Word of God and your relationship and position of sonship in the Kingdom of God. That is exactly what the authors do in the 15th verse when they state that God will redeem them and He will receive them unto Him. The Message Bible says, “But me? God snatches me from the clutch of death, he reaches down and grabs me.” Now that you see the fear and have identified why you are fearing, you can look into His Word to find His promises that specifically address your fear and why you are fearing.
As you read His Word and faithful promises regarding that area of fear, faith to overcome will come (Rom 10:17). Equipped with the Word of God you can now take those thoughts captive (2Cor 10:5). Your reasons for why you should be afraid will shrivel into nothingness as you now begin to see why you should NOT be afraid of that circumstance based on what the Father has said to you in His Word. Furthermore, you will find testimonies of His Goodness and Faithfulness to others who had fears based on the same reasons you did and see their His deliverance for them knowing He is no respecter of persons and will do it for you too (Acts 10:34).
If finances are tight and you fear lack, list out why you fear lack. Now look in His Word and find His covenant promises of provision, miracles of provision, read up on His faithfulness. Your reasons to fear will pale in comparison and be crushed like an ant next to the infinite list of examples of our good, loving and infallible Father. Go ahead and do this with anything you might be fearing or having some anxiety about. Conversations, new jobs, sickness; it doesn’t matter the answer to your problem and cure for your fear is in His Word.
He’s with you. He’s for you. He’s faithful. Fear Not!
