Psalms 78:53 NKJV And He led them on safely, so that they did not fear; But the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
When I was in college I used to take ballroom dancing classes. I even began proctoring basic classes at my instructor’s behest and taught a class at the YMCA. It was a lot of fun.
My instructor was native from somewhere in the old Soviet Republic. She was a world class gymnast and fled to the USA in her 20’s. She had been in gymnastics and ballroom dancing from a very young age and was even an Olympic Gymnastic judge during the 1996 Games in Atlanta. Besides being a very proper and elegant lady, she was also very strict.
If there was one thing that she made sure I learned it was when you take a lady onto the dance floor it is your job to lead them and maneuver them across the hectic and crowded floor safely. You see real ballroom dancing isn’t like Dancing With The Stars or dancing competitions, where you have large dancing floors and elaborate choreographed routines. There can be jam packed ballrooms with hundreds of people of all ages and skill levels trying to make their way around the room. Bumps, bruises, scrapes and twisted ankles are quite common. People fall down and others fall on them. I remember one open ballroom I went too looked like a mash pit with women in gowns and men in tuxedos. It was quire hilarious, actually.
I don’t know how many times I heard, “it is your responsibility to lead your partner. It is your job to protect her and keep her safe all the while making her look beautiful and showing her off to the people.” She certainly drilled it into our minds.
Now it was my partner’s job to follow my lead. She would communicate through looks, squeezes of my hand, and pressure on my shoulder. But I was to choose a path and weave through the obstacles of people with confidence so she would feel safe and be able to relax and show off her beauty.
When I read this Scripture I get that image of ballroom dancing. The Father God is leading us through this chaotic world. He stops us short from a nasty fall if we will just follow. He turns us just before we collide into disaster. If there is no opening, He makes one and parts the floor leading us through safely. All the while showing off the beauty of His people.
He will lead you safely. Your job is to trust Him, follow, and fear not. So relax, follow His lead and Fear Not!
