162. Don’t Fear Pestilence

Psalms 91:5-6 NKJV  You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day,  (6)  Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.

Pestilence is another word for plague.  Other more common synonyms for pestilence are: outbreak, infestation, epidemic, influenza, and even curse.  Psalm 91:6 tells us not to be afraid of outbreaks, sicknesses, or contagious diseases that walk in darkness.  Walking in darkness doesn’t mean they come at night but simply they show up as if it were night because you simply just don’t see them coming.

I just read a study this week by University of Rhode Island professor, Yinjiao Ye, that found watching TV shows laced with various types of health risks like Grey’s Anatomy, House, E.R., etc, increases anxiety and perceptions regarding viewers beliefs about their likelihood of contracting those health risks (www.uri.edu/news/releases/?id=5513 full article found in September issue of the journal Mass Communications and Society). Yinjiao warned that TV viewing of these types of shows is likely to make you fear sickness.

I don’t particularly care for those types of shows or movies with a “pandemic” theme and I guess now I have additional support why that’s ok.  Besides that though, I have Romans 10:17.  “Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.”  This powerfully true statement is referring to faith in God’s Word, which is truth, comes by hearing His Word.  The converse of this is doubt in His Word or
belief in lies comes by hearing lies.  Dwelling and feeding on shows centered on people constantly getting and/or dying from bizarre sicknesses makes you more likely to believe you may or will contract one yourself.  But God does not want you to fear pestilence.  Fearing sickness and disease keeps us from telling people, especially those that might be sick about the glorious Gospel of Christ and be healed.  Romans 1:16 says, “…the Gospel of Christ is the power of God unto Salvation. (Rom 1:16)” and that word salvation here means salvation, wholeness, completeness, provision, and health.

God doesn’t want you to fear getting sick or sicknesses around you for many reasons, but another one is right here in Psalm 91.  Verse 4 tells us that if we’ll make our home and dwelling in Him that, “He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge;”.  Why is that significant?  Because Malachi 4:2 tells us that, “The Sun of Righteousness shall arise With healing in His wings;” The Sun of Righteousness is referring to the SON of Righteousness, the Lord Jesus who has and is risen.  We could say it this way, “The Righteous Son Jesus has risen with healing in His wings.”

Since Jesus is risen from the dead and healing is in His wings (I trust you all know it’s not talking about literal wings) and through faith in Him we can make our dwelling in Him taking refuge under His wings symbolizing protection, we do not have to fear sickness and disease.  We don’t have to fear them because we are covered with His healing protection.  Why am I sick then?  Honestly it could be for any number of reasons, but certainly not knowing His healing nature and recognizing your position and privilege in that place of health determined to stand in it is one of the reasons.  If you have been fearing sickness or have sickness in your body, I want you to say, “I dwell in the secret place of the Most High.  I abide under the shadow of the Almighty.  He is my refuge, my fortress and my trust is in Him.  Sickness has no place in me, The Lord is risen with healing in His wings and He covers me in those healing wings.  I make my dwelling in a place of healing.  I make my home in Him.  I am the healed of the Lord therefore I fear no sickness or disease.

  1. Loved the connection between the wings of Psalm 91 and the healing wings. I’m claiming with renewed faith healing for my “bone on bone” left knee. Thank you, John! Your posts keep getting better and better!

      1. Thank you sooo much for your prayers, John! Not coincidentally, one of the praise choruses at the House of Prayer tonight referenced “the Sun of righteousness rising with healing in His wings.” Then our speaker tonight focused on healing miracles, like four examples of recovery of sight to the blind, in his own ministry. God is on the move, and the “greater works” are on the way!
