Psalm 112:1 GNB Praise the LORD! Happy is the person who honors the LORD, who takes pleasure in obeying his commands
Psalm 112:7 GNB He is not afraid of receiving bad news; his faith is strong, and he trusts in the LORD.
Bad news is everywhere. It’s in the media, it’s on Facebook & Twitter, and it’s in your phone calls. And nobody wants to hear bad news. Still it comes.
Now before I get in trouble for making a bad confession, remember that Jesus said, “In the world you will have tribulation…” that means there will be some bad news sometimes. Thankfully He finished that sentence with, “but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. (John 16:33)” Eventually you will hear some bad news but you never have to fear hearing it.
Unfortunately more people fear bad news than you might think. Maybe even you? If you’ve ever thought or responded, “Ugh, what is it now?” when someone simply calls your name, you’ve most likely been afraid of the report they were about to bring. Or your heart sinks when someone tells you they’ve got bad news for you. Some people are even afraid of going to the doctors or getting lab work done not because they fear needles or pain, but because they are afraid they might receive a bad report. We don’t have to be afraid of bad news.
News, good or bad, is just information. It may be a present fact but that doesn’t mean it has to stay. You can hear about a present fact and still live in the truth of the Reality you have in Christ Jesus. That is why this Psalm says, “Happy is the person who honors (lives in awe and reverence) the Lord, who takes pleasure in obeying his commands (following His Word.)” Verse 7 tells us that person never has to fear receiving bad news because his faith is strong and he trust in the Lord. You see this person knows that a bad report is subject to change. They aren’t looking for bad news but they aren’t afraid someone might bring them some because good news or bad news they are fully convinced of His Word and promises for them. The Message Bible says they are unfazed. The Amplified Bible says they will not be moved but their heart is firmly fixed, trusting (leaning on and being confident) in the Lord.
You don’t have to fear bad news. Instead you can remain confident that no matter how bad the situation may be, God is ready and able to bring a change to the situation that will bring about good. He is not the author of the bad news, but He is the Author and Finisher of His Word. Honor the Lord. Trust in His Word. Never, never, never cast away your confidence in Him (Hebrews 10:35). It is His Word that has the final authority and He is for you, He is with you, and He is Faithful. Fear Not!
