Psalms 118:1-6 NKJV Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever. (2) Let Israel now say, “His mercy endures forever.” (3) Let the house of Aaron now say, “His mercy endures forever.” (4) Let those who fear the LORD now say, “His mercy endures forever.” (5) I called on the LORD in distress; The LORD answered me and set me in a broad place. (6) The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?
God is good. He is merciful. His mercy endures forever.
What have you said about Him lately? This Psalm implores us to give thanks to Him. Why? Because He IS GOOD and His mercy is everlasting. That word mercy there (kheh-sed) is translated as loving kindness or love in some other translations. Both the NLT, and MSG translate it as His love endures forever. His love, His mercy, His goodness… all of those are great reasons to give Him thanks.
Then it tells us to say something. Three times this Psalm tells us to say, “His mercy (or love depending on your translation) endures forever.” You know sometimes you just have to keep speaking the TRUTH until you are fully convinced and the fear leaves.
The first time the author addresses Israel to speak of God’s eternal love/mercy. Israel is referring to the Children of Israel, the Hebrew nation. In other words, the people of God. Well, under the New Covenant are you God’s people? YES! So say, “His mercy, His love endures forever.” (Romans 11:17-19, Romans 8:15, 1 Peter 2:9)
Next the author tells the house of Aaron to speak of God’s everlasting love/mercy. The house of Aaron refers to the priesthood, the ministers appointed to serve God. Are you not a minister of reconciliation (2 Cor 5:18)? Are you not part of the royal priesthood? (1 Peter 2:9) Indeed you are. So say again, “His mercy, His love endures forever.”
The third mention here says, “Let those who fear the Lord now SAY, “His mercy endures forever.”” The author now calls for all people who respect and honor the Lord, the Jews, the converts, the proselytes, let them all speak of His enduring love/mercy. Do you have reverential respect for your Heavenly Father? Then say with me, “His mercy, His love endures forever.”
Keep saying it until you believe it. Most people don’t ever say what the Bible says about them and their circumstances. This Scriptures tells us point blank, here is what you need to say… All we have to do is obey and say. Faith will rise as you continually say. Then you’ll be able to confidently call upon His Name. Know He hears you and is with you. And stand FEARLESS because the merciful God, your loving Father is at your side. There is nothing to fear.
Psalms 118:1-6 NLT Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! His faithful love endures forever. (2) Let all Israel repeat: “His faithful love endures forever.” (3) Let Aaron’s descendants, the priests, repeat: “His faithful love endures forever.” (4) Let all who fear the LORD repeat: “His faithful love endures forever.” (5) In my distress I prayed to the LORD, and the LORD answered me and set me free. (6) The LORD is for me, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?
