Isaiah 8:12-14 MSG “Don’t be like this people, always afraid somebody is plotting against them. Don’t fear what they fear. Don’t take on their worries. (13) If you’re going to worry, worry about The Holy. Fear GOD-of-the-Angel-Armies. (14) The Holy can be either a Hiding Place or a Boulder blocking your way, The Rock standing in the willful way of both houses of Israel, A barbed-wire Fence preventing trespass to the citizens of Jerusalem.
I regularly tell people, “Fear is an airborne virus.” And verse 12 here confirms that yet again. If you listen to the fears of others too much you will begin to fear what they fear and take on their worries. Don’t do it. Who are these people? The world for starters.
Without Jesus it is impossible to live fearless in this world, because fear and doubt beget suspicion. Besides there really is a plot against them to steal from them, kill them and destroy them (John 10:10). Unfortunately many Christians have also fallen prey to the virus of fear because they keep listening to the fears of the world and not grown sufficiently in their confidence and understanding of the faithfulness and love of God.
Isaiah 8:13-14 tells people the only worry they should have is about what side of the Rock they are standing on. Are they on the inside or are they on the outside? The Rock is revealed as The God of Angel Armies who is on our side, there is nothing that can separate us from His love, not even death. Will you stay within His protection?
The world is a mess and outside of Jesus there is no hope. If you have been Born-Again, you are a child of God and a representative of the peace and hope there is in Him. Unfortunately, if you listen to the fears of the world and other people too much it will pull your focus away from the confidence you hold in Him. We have been delivered from fear (Psalm 34:4) and need no longer to listen to the worries, fears, and conspiracies of the world. We have the answer to fear, JESUS. And we have the assurance of that answer, the Holy Spirit.
Which side of the rock are you on? If you are on the inside looking out, then a great Boulder is protecting you from destruction, barbed-wire is encircling your border. Those who are outside are defenseless; that is why they are full of fear. Instead of getting swept away with their fear, invite them to become fearless. Invite them into His Hiding Place. Tell them about Jesus and the freedom that resides through living in Him. In Him everyone can FEAR NOT!
