Isaiah 12:2-6 NLT See, God has come to save me. I will trust in Him and not be afraid. The LORD GOD is my strength and my song; He has given me victory.” (3) With joy you will drink deeply from the fountain of salvation! (4) In that wonderful day you will sing: “Thank the LORD! Praise His name! Tell the nations what He has done. Let them know how mighty He is! (5) Sing to the LORD, for He has done wonderful things. Make known His praise around the world. (6) Let all the people of Jerusalem shout His praise with joy! For great is the Holy One of Israel who lives among you.”
There are a number of reasons that people drink alcohol or use drugs. One of them is that some are trying to medicate or deal with their anxieties and fears. Because many drugs including alcohol effect the Central Nervous System and have even been erroneously labeled “mood enhancing”, some have turned to them longing for that momentary suppression of their fears. I recently read that people with anxiety disorders are 3 times as likely to have a substance abuse issue. Trying to cope or deal with their fears they turned to various substances and ultimately become dependent upon them. This doesn’t have to be the case, nor does it need to stay that way.
We can trust in the Lord and not be afraid. There is fountain that we can joyfully drink deeply from and find relief from our fears. This fountain is Jesus, the Word of God (John 4:14; John 1:1).
Faith in God (trusting in Him) is necessary for a fear free life as well as a strong recovery from substance abuse. “The alternative to God-reliance is self-reliance.” (7 Principles of Recovery by Virgil Stokes). This requires more than just a belief that He exists. It is a shift in lifestyle reflecting a trust in God. It is a commitment to the will of God, a relationship with the Person of God, a dependence on the grace of God, and an obedience to the command of God.
Believing in God is a start, but trusting in Him which leads to us walking in fearless victory requires us to drink deeply from Him and His Word. When dealing with fear and anxiety many will self-prescribe “drink as needed”. That is exactly the Lord’s advice in Isaiah 12. It is drinking deeply from His Word that will build faith In Him and destroy the fears that plague our lives. So daily read His Word and then drink of it as needed throughout the day.
In addition to reading His Word, we also drink deeply from the fountain of salvation through prayer and deepening our relationship with the Person of God. The closer you grow to the Jesus of the Gospels your trust in Him will grow and the power of your fears controlling your life will diminish. Worship and personal time in prayer are excellent ways to spend time with Him and develop your relationship and trust in His amazing love and grace.
Lastly, trust is developed as we obey His Word. As you begin to obey His Word, following His teachings in the Bible, you will see His faithfulness in your life. This will result in an increase in your confidence in Him and reduce the impact of fear in your life. Drink deeply from the fountain of salvation and Fear Not, Drinks are on Him!
