257. Don’t Listen to the Rumor Mill

Jeremiah 51:46 NLT But do not panic; don’t be afraid when you hear the first rumor of approaching forces. For rumors will keep coming year by year. Violence will erupt in the land as the leaders fight against each other.

Jeremiah 51:46 MSG Don’t lose hope. Don’t ever give up when the rumors pour in hot and heavy. One year it’s this, the next year it’s that– rumors of violence, rumors of war.

Listening to rumors can wreck your day. Not only that, but they can lead you into fear. People always have something to say and rumors run rampant. Like the Message Bible says here in verse 46, “…One year it’s this, the next year it’s that…” The story changes from one moment to the next and if you get swept up in the rumors it won’t be long before fear sets in.

These folk were hearing rumors about being attacked. You might hear rumors about layoffs at work, policy changes, your company being bought out, etc… But you don’t have to be moved by the rumor mill. You can stay your mind upon the Lord and remain emotionally consistent no matter what people are saying or what is happening.

Continually listening to rumors can drag you down so you lose hope and give up. They get your mind thinking on things that might be instead of what is. They move you from a place of standing on the promises of God to thinking about, listening, and looking for evidence that the rumor is true. That’s a type of expectation. Rumors get you off the promise and believing/expecting the thing you heard. Don’t do it.

You don’t need to listen to the rumor mill about what might be. You have God’s Word on what is! Keep your heart focused on Him. Keep your mind stayed upon the Lord. Don’t get caught up in the rumor mill and you’ll stay in peace and Fear Not!
