Jonah 1:4-5 NET But the LORD hurled a powerful wind on the sea. Such a violent tempest arose on the sea that the ship threatened to break up! (5) The sailors were so afraid that each cried out to his own god and they flung the ship’s cargo overboard to make the ship lighter….
These sailors were in a terribly violent storm that cause even these experienced sailors to fear for their lives. Like what most people do when faced with certain disaster they began crying out to whatever gods they knew about or had been brought up to follow. Of course none of their gods rescued them, because there is only One true God.
These natural men found themselves in a horrible natural circumstance and though they desired supernatural help, they had no one to turn to. All they had was information and ideas about so-called deities and memorized prayers to them. Until they heard about the God of Jonah, they had no real hope. They had no hope because they had no relationship. They were crying out to gods they had never met.
Like these men, non-believers today who are faced with the ongoing natural terrors leading up to the ever approaching return of our Lord (wars, rumors of ward, natural disasters, ethnic group rising against ethnic group, rapidly declining morality, etc…), when faced with the situations that lead them to cry out for help are turning to all the wrong sources. They need the Church to stand and introduce them to the God of all gods.
Even though Jonah’s relationship with the Lord wasn’t the best at the time because he was running from his calling and refusing to obey God, after talking to him, these men knew that Jonah didn’t just have facts about his God but he knew Him. They could tell that Jonah had a real relationship with God and soon they abandoned calling out for false hope and had turned to the Living God for help.
The world will continue to experience fear. Even more so as the day approaches, but your presence and your commitment to tell people about Him in the midst of the storms of life will direct them to the one who will deliver them from all their fears (Psalm 34:4). You have a real relationship with the Living God; Don’t be afraid… let others see it, know it, and experience it today.
