3. The Victory Fear

spring sunsetGenesis 15:1 NKJV  After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”

Genesis 15:1 MSG  After all these things, this word of GOD came to Abram in a vision: “Don’t be afraid, Abram. I’m your shield. Your reward will be grand!”

After these things….  You may recall that in Chapter 14 there was a great tumult in the land as nine Kings chose sides and waged war against one another.  In the aftermath of the battle, the conquering kings took much spoil from the kingdoms of Sodom and Gomorrah where Lot (Abram’s nephew who was also taken captive) lived.  Abram gathered his servants and a few neighboring allies and set out to rescue Lot.  Abram and his small army overtook the conquering king’s forces, rescued Lot, and obtained all the massive spoil of wealth, food, and prisoners back from the conquering kings, sending their forces running.  Then word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision commanding him to FEAR NOT!

Abram undoubtedly upset a few people that day: the four Kings he defeated and even the five kings they initially plundered.  Although Abram gave them most of their possessions back, the thought of having someone so mighty living near them might have caused them to plot against Abram.  But God stepped in immediately to let him know NOT TO FEAR.

Often after a great victory in life, there comes an opportunity to fear.  What will the enemy do now?  What if they come after me?  What might be the next challenge around the corner?  God doesn’t want us to dwell on that for even a moment.  Instead, we are to remember His words.  FEAR NOT!

Romans 8:30 NKJV  Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.
